Dresden
Ich habe den Fernsehfilm "Dresden" schon lange
gesehen.
This is an excellent docu-drama about the firebombing of Dresden
at the end of World War II. It shows that in war people are people, and even
the supposedly heartless Germans can show compassion. The event that sparks the
main action is when an English fighter pilot, who speaks German in the movie
and in real life, played by John Light, gets shot down over Dresden and finds
his way to a hospital because he is badly injured. There a German nurse treats
him surreptitiously. She herself would have become a doctor, but had to become
a nurse because of the war. Her father is a doctor who runs the hospital. She
has a very attractive sister who is not a medical person, and she is friends
with some German soldiers (which shows that side of the war). Her boyfriend is
a doctor. At times we see the conflicts between the heartlessness of Nazism and
their compassion as medical professionals.
Of course she and the pilot fall in love, Dresden is
firebombed, but they escape to England, and hopefully live happily ever after.
